Berlin. Already in 2020, the photo artist Marta Djourina was awarded the Eberhard Roters Fellowship for Young Art. The award ceremony was cancelled last year due to a pandemic and was now made up for on 09/21/2021 at the Berlinische Galerie. The accompanying exhibition was on view between 09/22/2021 and 09/27/2021 at the Berlinische Galerie.

The scholarship was first awarded in 2000 by the Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung in honor of the founder of the Berlinische Galerie, Eberhard Roters (1929-1994). It serves to promote current young visual arts in Germany and is awarded by the foundation in cooperation with the museum. The award includes a one-year stipend for the artist and the purchase of one of her works for the Berlinische Galerie.

The jury explained its decision as follows: "Marta Djourina was born in 1991 in Sofia, Bulgaria. She lives and works in Berlin, where she studied art history and art theory at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin between 2009 and 2014. From 2012 to 2018, the young artist studied at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she successfully completed her art studies as a master student in the summer of 2018. In her work, Marta Djourina specifically focuses on the exploration of analog photographic paper in the photo lab. Her skills in the medium of photography and experimental photography include a wide range of craftsmanship in terms of technical-perfect making, as well as precise and conceptual thinking.
The artist has developed a highly independent position in recent years. She asks questions about the subjects in the image and about their conditions in experimental photography. Djourina is an alert and vital artist of her generation. The sensitive and intelligent questioning and examination of the appearance of digital and analog media seems immanent. Contemporary questions of surface and depth, original and copy, color, light and medium, materiality and the loss of the same are explored here in an intelligent, playful and highly focused way."

The jury includes the director of the Berlinische Galerie Dr. Thomas Köhler, the director of the Kunsthaus Dahlem Dr. Dorothea Schöne, the professor at the Institute of Art at the University of the Arts Prof. Christine Streuli and, in an advisory capacity, the director of Galerie Sprüth Magers Berlin Franziska von Hasselbach.

Berlin.

Marta Djourina: “The starting point for the “Touchpoint” series is the idea of visualising touch: The series captures an electrical discharge, which is created by an impulse when a finger touches the surface of an analogue photo paper, using the technique of Kirlian photography. The intimate contact process between the image carrier and the participant is documented and photographed using light-sensitive material. Dealing with the invisibility and, in some cases, the limitations of touch, form the framework of a series of meetings in which only me and one other person took part. The method becomes a tool to visualise something invisible in an immediate way, to reconsider the idea of distance and the lack of impression.
Each work is named after the person who’s touch it resembles, reminding of the interaction that happened in advance, and in its essence, reveals a highly individual image being as unique as the fingerprint itself. ”
